10 tricks to use Gmail Advanced Search Effectively

Gmail is one of the most popular Email Service providers in the world, There 7+ GB storage is I think more than any other Email services. With the advanced spam detection they provide some interesting features like gtalk,buzz,docs, etc where you have to use Gmail to access these products.

7+ GB means you never need to empty your inbox :) . That sounds good but this may lead to flood your emails and you can’t find or just have to give more time for searching important Emails. Recently google introduced feature by using this you can mark particular Emails as important. This will help you but what about old Emails ?

In this post I’m going to explain some tricks by using you can search your required Emails. No matter how many Emails you have in Inbox.

Here are the list of Gmail Operators(Filters) you can use to search within your Gmails.

#1 Search with the Quotes (“”)

Format : “Search keywords”
Example : “technology blog” : This will show all Emails containing phrase – “technology blog”

#2 Search by Emails Subjects (Subject)

Format : Subject:Keywords
Example : Subject:gmail tips : This will show all Emails containing keywords google, news.

#3 Search within emails from particular user (From)

Format : from:name of user
Example : from:TechnoBombs : Search emails received from TechnoBombs only

Format : from:[email protected]
Example : from:[email protected] : Search emails recived from this email only

#4 Search within emails sent to specific users (To)

Format : to:name
Example : to:technobombs : Return emails sent to a specific user

Format : to:[email protected]
Example : to:[email protected] : Search emails sent to a this email address.

#5 Search emails by its location (In)

Formate : in:location of email [supported - spam,inbox,sent,anywhere]
Example : in:inbox : this will returns email from inbox only

#6 Search emails by type (Is)

Format : is:type of email [starred/unread/read/chat]
Example : is:unread Return all unread emails emails, and is:chat will return all your Gtalk data

#7 Search Emails by date (Before: & After )

Format : before:yyyy/mm/dd
Example : before:20110/06/20 : Return emails before this date

Format : after:yyyy/mm/dd before:yyyy/mm/dd
Example : after:2011/06/01 before:2011/06/20 : Return emails within provided range

#8 Search Mails by Label

Format: label:label name
Example: label:Comments : Search emails with a specific label

#9 Search emails by attachment name (filename)

Format: filename:filename.format
Example: filename:presentation.pdf : Search emails with the exact filename attached

Format: filename:format
Example:filename:pdf : Search emails with same file type attached

#10 Separate atached emails and unattached (has)

Format: has:attachment : Returns email with attachment
